APC Candidates Ask Buhari to Stop Party National Convention – Blueprint Newspapers Limited

The All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention aspirants’ forum has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to halt the party’s national convention scheduled for March 26 by the Extraordinary Convention Interim and Planning Committee (CECPC).

The APC candidates, in a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, jointly signed by the forum’s chairman and secretary, Chief Tolulope Ashafa, and Alhaji Usman Adamu, insisted that going ahead with the convention would lead to an internal crisis within the party, calling on the president to urgently shut down the convention.

The letter reads in part: “Nigerians were delighted when Your Excellency approved the Elections Act 2022. In Nigeria’s recent political history, there have been very few other developments that have united Nigerians across the political, ethnic and sectarian spectrum as the signing of the Electoral Law Amendment Bill 2022 was passed.

“The APC has only three (3) months to hold the national convention and organize the primaries to submit the list of candidates to the CENI. The party cannot hold two national conventions within 90 days. The waste of resources and the dissipation of energy would simply be too great.

“The raging crises and conflicts within the party, which have been largely managed by the CECPC, would erupt again in such a way that the APC would turn on itself in the 2023 general election. This is a another result on which the opposition is pinning its hopes as it expects to absorb those who would be angry to leave the APC.

“The National Convention should rather be scheduled at a time that allows the 30 days notice to the CENI. The date of the National Convention should be timed so that it also serves as the APC presidential primary, which would reduce costs in line with Nigerians’ desire to reduce the cost of campaigning.

“The CECPC must halt existing plans for the national convention and come up with a new model that combines the national convention with the presidential primary while focusing on preparations for other primary elections. Your Excellency, as leader of the party, your prayer is that you order the party and the CECPC to stop the national convention and focus on our party primaries.
