DNC urges Milwaukee to apply to host city for 2024 Democratic National Convention

MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee is considering hosting the Democratic National Convention again, after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the city to hold the convention virtually in 2020.

The Democratic National Committee wrote in a letter to the city on July 30 that this was the “very first step” and that if the Milwaukee administration was interested it should contact the DNC by October 1. . The process for choosing a host city officially begins. Later this year.

The city was one of 20 to send a letter from the Democratic National Committee requesting the submission of bids.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said in a statement Monday that “Milwaukee remains interested in becoming a site of national political convention.”

Barrett adds that he will begin consulting with partners “as we make decisions about moving forward.”

“Based on its designation of Milwaukee as the host of the 2020 convention, the Democratic National Committee certainly has a positive impression of our city,” according to Barrett’s statement.

Milwaukee was eager to be in the limelight as the host city for the 2020 Democratic convention, but the event was forced to be held largely virtually due to concerns over COVID-19. It was also a missed opportunity to jumpstart the economy – a benefit the DNC highlighted in its letter to Milwaukee for the 2024 convention.

The DNC notes that in the past, host cities in person have enjoyed an economic impact of around $ 150-200 million – with more than 35,000 delegates, guests of honor and members of the press in attendance.

The DNC also said that after hosting an unconventional 2020 version, “we are open to exploring new approaches and also continue to rethink how best to organize our next convention.”

According to the letter from DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison, “In 2024, the Democratic Party will come together to reaffirm our commitment to the fundamentals of our party, celebrate the achievements of President Biden and Vice President Harris, and nominate our candidates for office. the presidency and the vice-presidency. President of the United States. We are starting the site selection process earlier this cycle and would like to invite you to consider hosting the 2024 Democratic National Convention. It will be a historic event that can help shape the future of your city for decades to come. “

Democratic State Representative Christine Sinicki of Milwaukee said Monday that “I would like Milwaukee to get it automatically, but there is a process we have to go through.”

Siniki is the interim chairman of the Milwaukee County Democratic Party. This organization issued its own statement asking the Committee to abandon the process.

“We shouldn’t have to explain why Milwaukee would be a great location for the DNC in 2024 – we already did just a few years ago. Instead, we are simply asking the selection committee to follow the precedent of so many other postponed events and honor your national commitment to our state. “

The Republican National Committee has reportedly not yet started the process of finding a congress city and has issued a statement on the DNC’s request for tenders:

“After pulling off the biggest trick since Houdini removing Joe Biden from Wisconsin in 2020, we sincerely hope the DNC will remember finishing the act by having him appear in the Badger State in 2024.”

The Milwaukee convention and visitors bureau, Visit Milwaukee, said in a statement that “VISIT Milwaukee, which is instrumental in hosting meetings and conventions of all sizes in Milwaukee, would welcome the opportunity to work. with the community on a candidacy for the Democratic National Convention of 2024.. We were impressed and grateful for the efforts made in the last bid, which included constant collaboration between national and local authorities, and incredible work from our hotel community. We hear from meeting planners across the country tell us how excited they are about what’s going on in Milwaukee, especially with the spotlight on the Milwaukee Bucks title race and the expansion of the Wisconsin Center, and it doesn’t It’s no surprise that the DNC is excited about these things too.

It is believed that the other two finalists for 2020, Miami and Houston, have also been invited to submit an offer if they are interested.
