The Senator representing Abia North in the National Assembly, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has exonerated himself of the accusation that he was among those undermining the March 26 national convention of the All Progressives Congress.
The accusation came from a former chief executive of the Progressive Governors Forum, the PGF, Dr Salihu Lukman and who he says is an “unfortunate accusation” leveled against him.
In a statement credited to Lukman, he reportedly said that some party leaders were working with the chairman of the extraordinary convention’s interim planning committee, CECPC Mai Mala Buni, to undermine the party’s March 26 national convention.
He reportedly specifically noted that “there are other party leaders including Sen Uzor Kalu who actively supported His Excellency Mai Mala to undermine the decision to hold the National Convention of the party.”
However, in a statement signed by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu himself, and made available to Punch in Umuahia, the Chief Whip of the 9th Senate of the National Assembly said: “It is on this note that I consider it necessary to correct Lukman’s bad impressions. must make efforts to create.
“There has not been a time when I have been involved in any collaboration or collusion to ensure that attempts to hold the APC national convention are blocked.
“It will be recalled that on December 15, 2021, I made an appeal to the party and members of the interim/extraordinary convention planning committee to consider postponing the national convention scheduled earlier in February.
“I had warned that holding the convention in February without resolving the minor disagreements that arose during the convention would lead to an implosion.
“I feared that the creation of factions that denied the party’s victory in so many states in the last elections would be repeated. I therefore called for a peaceful resolution of the crisis before the Convention is held. No peaceful and tactful leader would support a terrible scenario happening again.
“It is important to note that I have always defended and supported the party and that Governor Mai Mala Buni was only the president of the party. Besides being the president of the party, Buni is my old family friend and I can’t deny it because he faces challenges today. We have been friends and family for 25 years.
“It is imperative to say that Buni has done very well for the party. His remarkable leadership is what has helped stabilize our great party in all six geopolitical zones, with high profile defections in our favor.
“In this time of challenges and misunderstandings, I call on party leaders and stakeholders to keep their words to themselves to avoid creating further discord. Even in a nuclear family, disagreements and squabbles exist.”
According to him, “the APC is a very large party with several caucuses. We have governors, the National Assembly, businessmen, youth and women, among other caucuses. The orientations and concerns of these caucuses must be taken into consideration at all times.
“In the future, whether it is Governor Mai Mala Buni or Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, I will always give the party my maximum support and promote stronger growth. There is always a danger with one floor and I ‘encourage Mr. President to hear both sides of the story so that the party can win together’.
