Milwaukee, who held a reduced Democratic convention in 2020, made the list of the four finalist cities considered to host the 2024 Republican National Convention.
Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City and Nashville, Tennessee are the other finalists. The news was first reported on Friday by Politico.
“The Republican National Committee is grateful for and appreciates the immense interest shown by cities across the country in hosting the 2024 Republican National Convention,” RNC chief of staff Richard Walters said in a statement. “We will continue with the process, review the offers, and contact potential hosts to learn more about what their cities have to offer.
The plan is for RNC staff to travel to the four finalist cities to confirm their viability to host the convention. The selection will be narrowed down to three cities and the site selection committee will travel to the cities to review the offers and meet with potential hosts.
“I have been in contact with my people and they are moving forward seeing us as a candidate for the 2024 Republican National Convention,” said Peggy Williams-Smith, president of VISIT Milwaukee, the group leading the nomination.
She said RNC officials “have asked about our offer. They are definitely looking at us.”
Williams-Smith said she “couldn’t be happier” that Milwaukee was still in the race to win the convention.
“It proves everything we know about our city,” she said. “That we’re a city in demand, a city on everyone’s radar. We have the capacity to host a major national event like this. I’m thrilled like a punch.”
The same reasons Democrats chose Milwaukee in 2020 could be at stake for Republicans in 2024. Wisconsin is a key battlefield state, vital for both parties in presidential races. Milwaukee can also provide a compact convention footprint, which includes the Fiserv Forum and Wisconsin Center, currently undergoing a $ 420 million expansion.
Pittsburgh is also part of Pennsylvania’s key political battlefield.
“We are excited about the momentum behind Milwaukee’s bid to host the Republican National Convention in 2024,” Gerard Randal, the first vice president of the Wisconsin Republican Party who helped lead the bid. “It would represent a tremendous opportunity for Republicans to bring the conservative message of freedom and prosperity directly to voters in Wisconsin, while presenting the state to the United States.”
The other two potential GOP sites are in strong Republican states, Nashville in Tennessee and Salt Lake City in Utah.
Acting Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said, “Milwaukee welcomes the attention and economic impact that a national political convention could bring. We’ll show the Republican National Committee – or other great convention planners – how great our city is. I appreciate all the work that Visit Milwaukee and other partners are doing in this effort.
Milwaukee has claimed the right to host the 2020 Democratic convention in Miami and Houston. But hopes of attracting tens of thousands of visitors to the city have evaporated with the coming coronavirus pandemic.
In the end, the Democrats hosted a mostly virtual convention with the big live events being held in Wilmington, Delaware.
Milwaukee is also suing the 2024 Democratic Convention.
Nashville too, with the offers made “At the request and support” of Republican Governor of Tennessee Bill Lee.
