ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey (CBS) – There’s a lot of excitement surrounding this summer’s NAACP national convention taking place in Atlantic City. It will be the first time in two years that the convention has been held in person since the pandemic.

“One thing Atlantic City knows how to do is throw a party,” said Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr.

After two years of absence, this year’s theme is “This is Power”.

“It’s the ability to make things happen or to stop things from happening. That’s power,” said NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson.

“It’s a legacy that guides our economic justice, tackles the systemic roots of poverty, and secures fairness for our middle class and those who struggle,” Governor Phil Murphy said.

While deciding its political agenda, including priorities for the coming year, the civil rights organization will bring together leaders to work on solutions for criminal and environmental justice, police reform, voting and reproductive rights. The more than 100-year-old organization has always been at the forefront of the fight for change.

“We want our fair share because we deserve it. Nobody gave us anything. We worked, we bled and died,” said Dr Hazel Dukes.

Bringing new life to AC, the convention is expected to provide a $9.3 million boost to the city’s economy.

“You’re all going to have so much fun you might sign a deal to come back next year,” said Mayor Small Sr.

The July convention is open to the community. You do not need to be a member of the NAACP to attend.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have both been invited to attend.
